AK: Deer and wolf hunting information meetings set

Posted by Leila Kheiry

State wildlife officials have scheduled public meetings in Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island to go over wolf and deer hunting regulations for Game Management Units 1A and 2.

Unit 1A is the Ketchikan area. Unit 2 is Prince of Wales and surrounding islands.

The meetings will cover regulation changes for deer hunting in Unit 2, as well as abundance levels for deer in both game management units, and wolf abundance on Prince of Wales.

Deer hunting on POW recently was limited for non-subsistence hunters to two bucks. That was in response to concerns from subsistence hunters about the availability of deer on the big island.

Wolf hunting on POW has been a controversial topic for several years. Last year, the harvest quota was 46 wolves, based on a population estimate of 231.

The public meeting in Ketchikan is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 28th in borough assembly chambers at the White Cliff Building.

Meetings on Prince of Wales Island are at 7 p.m. Aug. 29th at the Craig Tribal Hall; and 7 p.m. Aug. 30th at the Forest Service’s Thorne Bay Ranger District conference room.
