ANCHORAGE, Alaska— The Anchorage Police Department reports a dog was attacked and injured by a wolf in Eagle River early Sunday morning.

Otto and Theresa McLean say they called dispatchers shortly before 5 a.m. to report that a wolf had attacked their Dachshund, Sandy. The dog had just been let out of their home when the McLeans heard a yelp; they opened the door again and Sandy ran inside, while a white wolf ran away from the scene.

The McLeans asked police for permission to shoot the wolf if they saw it again in the future, but APD spokesperson Lt. Dave Parker says the department isn’t allowed to give people permission to shoot animals.

Terry McLean says Sandy is shaken up and “a little bit sore” after Sunday’s attack, with scratches or bite marks on two of her legs and an ear. The McLeans plan to take Sandy to a veterinarian Monday.

According to reports by residents, three other dogs have been killed recently by wolves, but police say at this time it is unknown when and exactly where that happened.

Editor’s note: After an interview with the dog’s owners, the account of the wolf attack has been changed from initial details provided by APD.
