Wolf sightings have become more and more frequent in the city

Prince Rupert residents are being warned of local wolf sightings in most areas of the city. The RCMP have issued a statement to inform the community to report any encounters to either them or the BC Conservation Officer Service. CFTK-TVs Devon Johnson has more on this issue.

You never know just what could be roaming in your neck of the woods.

“So over the past month the Prince Rupert RCMP have responded to approxiamately 14 complaints with regards to wolf sightings in and around the areas of Prince Rupert.”

Two residential areas where wolves have been spotted are around Graham Avenue and India Avenue..forcing residents to be prepared at all times.

“Yeah they’re really intimidating, it’s a really good thing I don’t have any pets like dogs or cats because they would definitely not be allowed outside.”

There are other precautions the community can take to ensure their safety.

“Some of these things can be removal of all garbage outside so that there’s no food source that the wolves are attracted too. Of course here in Prince Rupert there are a lot of hunters so people are quartering up game, so ensuring that those areas are very clean, small pets not to leave them unattended and in outdoor areas.”

“With a city surrouned by woods, wildlife sightings are very common. However, the RCMP says there has only been one known wolf attack as they usually mind their own business.”

“It sounds strange but speak to the wolf in a very stern voice, yell at it and try to scare it off. If all else fails and the wolf does start to advance on you, again try to make yourself as large as possible, intimidate the wolf. ”

The RCMP have met with the BC Conservation Office to make a proactive plan. In the meantime, if you have any wolf encounters, contact the RCMP.
