Crisis in the Middle East
Information from: Tri-County Journal, May 3, 1995
Numbering only 20 in captivity and roughly 2,000 in the wild, Mideastern wolves, also know as Indian and Iranian wolves, are among the most seriously threatened wolf species.
Because few people are willing to perform studies in unsafe areas of the Middle East, there is some debate over how many of these wolves actually survive in the wild.
Indian wolf populations are viable, but threatened because they share the areas of water and cover with other large carnivores and 9 million people in this nation that is one-third the size of the United States.
Earthwatch, an environmental activist group, is working to fund and staff efforts of the Wildlife Institute of India to study Mideastern wolves. They hope to develop a survival and conservation plan for the wolves based on data collected by volunteers this year.
