Call to Membership

As a recently elected board member, I more than ever feel responsible to expand the public’s knowledge about the truth and demystification which surrounds the timber wolf. But what this is all about is a call-to-arms so to speak which concerns the success and/or failure of the wolf recovery program.

Board member or not, if we truly love this animal, we need to rise above our everyday lives and be a constant role model to those around us as to the peril of the wolf. The bottom line here is that wolf recovery will only succeed if the public allows it to succeed. We are not out of the woods yet, and the wolf is not out of danger. This means that as a membership, we must do all that we can to inform those around us as to the benefits of putting wolves back into the ecosystem. And if we don’t feel knowledgeable enough to do this, then it is time we obtain at least a minimal amount of education concerning the biology of the wolf and the human attitudes which stand in the way of recovery.

TWIN is a good place to start this process. We have many good readings available and even more suggestions if you just give a board member a call. Personally, I have an academic background in natural resources and have been following the wolf recovery program since those initial forums put on by Dick Thiel back in the late 1980s, but am amazed at what I don’t know concerning the timber wolf. Currently, I am reading Peter Steinhart’s The Company of Wolves and feel ashamed that I didn’t pursue more literature at an earlier time. Please, get involved, and call/write/fax/email us with any issues you need help with.
