Have We Got a Deal for You...

As members of TWIN, you know that our primary goal, our mission statement, is to increase public awareness of the timber wolf through education. And of course, we are all members because of our love of the animal. But for those of you who find themselves wishing that they could get involved in what some may think is the more glamorous work of actually collecting field data for this majestic animal, well, here is your chance.

TWIN, in conjunction with the Wisconsin DNR’s Volunteer Carnivore Tracking Survey for the winter of 1996-1997, has secured a block of north central Wisconsin in which we will be responsible for the collection of tracking data to determine population counts of a known wolf territory.

Requirements for this task will be very warm clothing, snowshoes and/or cross-country skis, the ability to sit in a vehicle for long periods of time, and your desire to put up with me and my charismatic personality for 8-12 hours (notice that I put the easy requirements first). Surveys will be conducted from December through March, God and snow willing. The frequency of field surveys will be dependent on weather, your availability, and just how much help I can get from the tracking gurus. But for most of you, being a master tracker is not required. It wasn’t a requirement for me to get involved. If you have any questions and/or interest, you may contact me through Web master (see our home page), Marilyn at Lobo Lingo, or call me at 715-341-1160 day or night. Hope to see you this winter, as long as I don’t get buried in the snow again (ask Chad or Jason about that one).

Chris Giese
