Many wolves may be hunted in Finland

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

STOCKHOLM / TT

In Finland, a maximum of 29 wolves may be taken in 2015. The Agriculture and Forestry Ministry has decided on how many wolves that may be shot in order to preserve the country’s wolf population. This will be done on a trial basis for two years.

Previously, it has required special permission of the Finnish Wildlife Agency or police orders to hunt wolves that were considered causing major damage or a threat to human safety.

The wolf population has grown significantly in a year and is now considered to comprise 220 animals, compared with 140 a year ago. The largest increase occurred in eastern Finland. The estimate of the number of wolves in the country is based on known wolf packs and wolf pairs.
