MN: Dog killed by wolf on trail in Duluth

KARE Staff

DULUTH, Minn. – State wildlife experts say wolf attacks like the one that killed a dog on a popular trail in Duluth Tuesday are becoming more common.

The North Shore Veterinary Hospital posted on its Facebook page that a golden retriever mix named Leo was attacked on the trail that leads to Lake Superior’s Brighton Beach. The dog was on a walk with its owner and was off the leash at the time of the attack.

Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Keith Olson says the deer population is not as plentiful in that area for wolves to feed on, so they are more likely to wander into more urban settings.

Here is the post by the vet clinic to its customers.

A tragic incident has lead us to send out this warning to our clients:
At about noon today one of our patients was killed by a lone timber wolf while walking off leash with his owner on a trail near Brighton Beach. We want to share this information because many of us walk our pets in this area; we want everyone to be aware and as safe as possible. Officer Olson with the DNR visited us this afternoon and shared that wolves are becoming more common in Duluth and the surrounding areas. This can be attributed to a more concentrated population of deer in urban settings and lower populations in rural areas. Officer Olson recommends escorting your pets outside, especially at night, and keeping your dog leashed when out for walks.
