MT: Pro-wolf group rallies in Helena

By Julianne Dellorso

HELENA – The Wolf & Wildlife Action Group took to the Capitol lawn in Helena on Monday for a peaceful demonstration.

They put up yellow caution tape and displayed pictures with images of wolves that had been killed.

According to the group, an estimated 3,000 wolves were killed nation-wide last year, including 270 in Montana.

The protesters said they were there on behalf of the 80% of Americans who want wolves to be placed on the Endangered Species List.

WWAG planned to serve Governor Steve Bullock with three “violation notices” for Montana’s “crimes against nature” as spelled out in the United Nations Charter for Nature.

With the Governor out of town running the Boston Marathon, WWAG delivered the documents to Adam Schafer, a representative for Bullock.

The first of the violations WWAG issued was for trapping.

“We demand Gov Bullock instruct the MDNRC to immediately stop trapping and killing of Wolves and Including All other Wildlife,” it read.

The second violation was for “reintroducing endangered wolves, only to kill them before they fully recovered, by planned extermination.”

The third violation stated that “wolves are essential to a healthy ecosystem.” After having their “violations” dated, the protestors left the Capitol.

Karen Wells, one of the organizers of the event, said she was “disappointed” with the turn-out and the result.
