Assistance for ranchers dealing with wolf-livestock conflicts is now available through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
PENDLETON — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has set aside $356,000 to help ranchers in Oregon, Washington and Idaho deal with wolves around their livestock.
Funding comes from the agency’s Wolf Livestock Demonstration Project Grant Program, which pays for non-lethal wolf management and compensates producers for losses caused by wolves.
A total of $190,000 will be awarded for livestock losses, with $100,000 to Idaho, $83,690 to Washington and $6,310 to Oregon. Oregon will also receive $66,000 for non-lethal prevention, along with $100,000 to Washington.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture also allocates state dollars for ranchers living in wolf country. ODA awarded $81,300 to nine Eastern Oregon counties in June.
