SE: 24 wolves may be shot this winter

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

The County Administrative Board has approved licensed hunting of up to 24 wolves this winter. The hunt will be conducted from January 9 to February 15, 2015 or until the County Board decides to conclude the hunt before then.

The County Administrative Board of Värmland has now decided that 24 wolves be combined in two hunting areas covering the territories Forshaga Gårdsjö, Medskogen and Kläggen.

“We have taken a decision on the license to hunt wolves in Värmland on the basis of the legal conditions that exist, but also based on the objectives we have set up for our regional management plan for large carnivores. In our opinion, several factors are important, such as the density of the population, the regions impact on elk hunting, the injury picture and the genetic status of the pairs in the territories,” says Maria Falkevik, predators Manager at the County Administrative Board.

The County Board believes that the purpose of hunting is to first reduce the number of wolves repopulating in the county but also the concentration of packs in the territories for hunting. The Board is of the opinion that to reach this goal, the best way to hunt is directed towards the entire territory.

“We expect that this decision will be appealed. Environmental organizations have earlier appealed all licensed hunt decisions,” says Maria Falkevik.

Reducing the number of wolves repopulating the county is part of the progressive achievement of the management objectives, of 12 annual wolf litters, as the Wildlife Management Advisory Board approved writes the provincial government in a press release. Environmental Protection Agency has previously determined that the minimum level of Värmland, 110 wolves.

“We will now come down to 15 litters (150 individuals) with this hunt. Then we gradually lowering ourselves down to 12 litters (120 individuals). So this is a step along the way.

So is there likely to be hunting next winter too?

“Yes, that’s the idea,” says Maria Falkevik, to P4 Värmland.
