SE: County Board: At least two wolf litters per year

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

These days, it became clear how many litters of wolves that the county administrative boards consider ahead of time.

The population is growing by 15 percent per year. Now there are 370 animals in Sweden. And the question of hunting is once again up in the air.

Nowadays, the size of the wolf population is decided regionally as long as there are at least 270 wolves in Sweden. The parliament decided this in late 2013.

Therefore, the county administrative boards for the first time, decided how many litters per year, it will at least be in the counties. For Västra Götaland, it was two litters.

At the last wolf inventory, there were three wolf territories in the county: Kynnefjäll, Kroppefjäll and Dals-Ed, but no certain litters.

“It is unclear if we reach the minimum level for regeneration. It’s hard to say if we come across the two litters in the near term,” says Anita Bergstedt who is the predators manager for the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland.

But when the eight counties of central predator management area have compiled their answers for the Environmental Protection Agency, it shows that they want fewer litters than what the Environmental Protection Agency has set as a limit.

Therefore, the figures were adjusted up afterwards and it will certainly cause a heated debate in the various counties that have many wolf pairs.

For it is now that the discussions will start regionally around hunting licensing and on how many wolves can be shot. In conclusion, namely that one locally wants fewer wolves than what has been said at the national level.
