SE: Plan for the wolf’s future-ready

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

STOCKHOLM / TT

For the first time, Sweden has a management plan for the Swedish wolf population. The plan, which was developed by EPA, based on two objectives: a viable wolf population for favorable conservation status, and policies that facilitate a good coexistence between humans and wolves.

“The view of the wolf is very polarized. Reducing polarization is one of the great challenges we face,” said Ruona Burman at the EPA in a statement.

The agency emphasizes that inbreeding among the wolves must be reduced, and that the population should not be too small if it is to survive in the long run. The damage caused by the wolves to dogs and hunting dogs need to be reduced.

The agency also notes that the plan is not detailed on all points. This means that it can be modified in the future.

The management plan is required by the European Commission, which previously criticized Sweden for such lack of planning.

The plan, which became public on Friday, lacking details. It is not clear exactly what is meant by a genetically healthy wolf population. Nor have any hard numbers on how much the wolf population should be. However, the Authority believes that this not been the intention at this time.

“We can not anticipate the politicians’ final positions. This is an initial platform for further work. It may be filled in afterwards. But eventually it becomes a final plan,” says Ruona Burman.

Within a month the situation can be partly clarified. But now, a vulnerability assessment will be worked out for the wolf population and will provide an indication of how many wolves are needed in the country to maintain its future and what the population should be to be considered secure.
