News P4 Varmland

Of the 19 wolf territories in and around Värmland at least eight appear to have puppies. This is this year’s wolf inventory that is currently underway.

Although the inventory will not be completed until the end of March Lars Furuholm at the County Administrative Board of Värmland believes rejuvenation will be slightly fewer than last year.

“So it looks right now, but it can change. This figure is yet preliminary”, says Lars Furuholm which will shortly be find themselves out in wolf territory.

Among the animals bearing the puppies are a couple of those considered to be genetically valuable.

In addition to counting wolf puppies the County Board also is busy trying to prepare for a possible transplanting which may occur during the spring.

However, several problems must be resolved before the zoo puppies can be released to the wild packs. In addition to the land owners giving their permission for transplanting the alpha females such must also be fitted with a GPS collar.

In addition, wild wolves often breed earlier in the year than zoo wolves, which means that the age difference between the sets of pups may be too great.
