SE: Sheep owners to hold vigils against the predators policy

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

MALMÖ / TT

Sheep-owners around the country participating in the evening in a “carnivore vigil.” Around 140 people will watch in their paddocks – according to the farmers the only thing that works to protect the sheep from wolves.

“The predator fence that the provincial governments refer to is not a sufficient protection,” says Magnus Jonsson in Skåne’s Horby.
He belongs to a dwindling band of sheep owners.

“We have suffered a collective depression,” he says.

The sheep owners are critical of the predator policy and believe that the preservation of the wolf population goes before the farmers’ welfare. That the County Administrative Board in Skåne a couple of weeks ago issued a permit to cull the wolves thinks that is good, but argues that the decision took too long.

“Now they waited until there had been three wolf attacks already. It’s too late,” says Magnus Jonsson.

The predators vigils will be held between 19 and 21 o’clock in the evening in six of the Swedish sheep breeding association’s districts.
