WI: DNR wants hunter-input on using dogs for wolf hunt

UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking wolf hunters and trappers to help its efforts to draft a permanent rule on the use of dogs in wolf hunting. The D-N-R wants those hunters to let a federal wildlife specialist watch them skin their kills this fall. The state wants to know if the hunters’ dogs are attacking the wolves.

Animal rights activists continue to question the use of hounds to chase down the wolves. The hunters say their dogs have been trained to chase, but not engage.

Examination of about three dozen wolves killed during last year’s season produced no conclusive evidence of fights with dogs or violations of the law.
