Wildlife Defenders Boast Successful Wolf Cohabitation

By Tracee Davis

Defenders of Wildlife is reporting Idaho has experienced its best year yet in terms of cohabitation with wolves on public lands where herd animals graze. Spokesperson, Suzanne Stone, said the non-lethal wolf management tools implemented there have resulted in only four sheep being killed by the predators.

Non-lethal wolf management includes livestock protection dogs, shooting blanks, air horns, flag fencing and increased human presence. Other forms of population control for wolves are costly and less effective, says Stone.

State versions of wolf control involve radio collars, sharpshooters and helicopters.

The Wood River Wolf Project is hoping to establish a precedence for successful cohabitation between wolves and livestock in areas where wolves have been delisted in Idaho for more than a year now.
