Wolves kill 27 sheep near Berlin

Berlin – A pack of wolves killed 27 sheep near the German capital,
said media reports on Thursday.

Farmer Frank Neumann told Bild newspaper that the sheep, part of
his herd of almost 300 animals, had been protected by a 2 000 volt
electric fence.

But the predators managed to evade the barrier and attacked the
animals, he said, adding that tracks in the wet ground clearly
showed it was wolves which had done the killing.

Neumann’s farm is near the village of Muehlrose, about 50km
south-east of Berlin.

Wolves, which were exterminated in the region during the 19th
century have returned to eastern Germany from Poland over the
past decade.

Under the communist regime of former East Germany wolves were
shot on sight.

Since the 1990 German unification wolves have been protected
and are re-establishing themselves in their former territories.

A wolf pack numbering up to 10 animals is resident on an army
tank training facility in the Oberlausitz, south of where the sheep were
killed.

With 14 500 hectares of mainly wooded terrain, the military base is
an ideal German bridgehead for wolves, say biologists. – Sapa-
