A dark-colored male wolf described as a “disperser” by DNR biologist Adrian Wydeven was illegally shot and killed in Oconto County recently, but the landowner who pulled the trigger was not fined.

The wolf kept returning after warning shots were fired, Wydeven said. He suspected it was the animal that chased two people on horses a week earlier.

It was suspected to be a wolf-dog hybrid, but Wydeven said genetic testing did not come up with any dog genes.
