KELOWNA, B.C. – Hunters in British Columbia’s Okanagan region can once again put wolves in the crosshairs.
The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations says the number of wolf packs in the Okanagan has grown, allowing hunting or trapping of the animals.
Officials estimate between 75 and 100 wolves have returned to the region in the decades since the creatures were almost wiped out there.
Ministry wildlife biologist Brian Harris predicts few hunters will apply for licences allowing the shooting or trapping of up to three wolves per season.
He also says it’s extremely difficult to shoot wolves, so he believes the harvest will be very low.
Bag limits are in effect on wolf hunts in some areas of the province, but it’s open season in other regions as biologists work to protect populations of moose or various species of deer.
