CA NL: Officials Hope to Examine Wolf-Like Animal

Efforts are underway to learn more about a large wolf-like animal shot near Port Blandford earlier this week. A picture posted to the Coyote Hunting in Newfoundland Facebook group shows a man holding the carcass of a large grey and white animal that is the full length of his body. The animal has a large head and short ears and resembles a Labrador grey wolf shot on the Bonavista Peninsula two years ago.

Director of Wildlife with the Department of Environment and Conservation, John Blake, says they hope to examine the animal to learn more about it, and speak to the man who shot it.

Blake says there have been two confirmed cases of Labrador grey wolves on the island – one in 2008, the other in 2012. He says it’s entirely possible that other animals also made it to the island, but it’s too soon to say if there’s a breeding population present.
