CA: Park officials ask visitors to cry wolf

Andrew Bailey, Westerly News

Increased wolf activity on the West Coast has Parks Canada officials urging visitors to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve to explore with caution.

The conservation officer was in Tofino on Monday to investigate a heightened level of wolf sightings in the district.

“It is not yet known whether the increase in wolf activity in nearby communities will correspond with higher than normal wolf activity inside the park reserve,” says the park’s manager of resource conservation Renee Wissink.

“During the park reserve’s low season,” he explains, “there are fewer visitors and staff members to report wildlife sightings.”

Park officials are asking visitors to report any sightings of wolves or cougars immediately in order for staff to monitor wildlife movement and make decisions on area closures.

Spotters of such wildlife can contact the park at 1-877-852-3100 to report any details on sightings including the time and location.

Park visitors are reminded to keep pets on a leash at all times, never approach a wild animal, and to carry pepper spray as well as an airhorn in case a wolf or cougar approaches.
