CA SK: Saskatchewan government targets wolves again to reduce livestock predation

By: The Canadian Press

REGINA – The Saskatchewan government is again targeting wolves in the hope of reducing livestock losses.

The Ministry of Environment is offering a wolf hunting season for wildlife management zones along the provincial forest fringe from Saturday until the end of March.

Environment Minister Scott Moe says the hunt will eliminate some wolves and scare others away from open areas where livestock graze.

The hunt is only open to Saskatchewan residents and there is no limit to the number of hunting licences available.

Moe says he expects a kill rate of five per cent or less.

Saskatchewan held similar wolf hunts last year and in 2014.

“Livestock predation by wolves is an ongoing problem for producers in areas near the provincial forest,” Moe said.

Last year the province made 200 licences available that allowed each hunter to kill up to two wolves.
