DK: Researchers battle over Danish wolf numbers

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

DENMARK / TT RITZAU

Denmark has not as many wild wolves as previously thought. New DNA analysis shows that there is at most about a handful, according to researchers from the University of Copenhagen. But they immediately met with opposition from Aarhus researchers.

Attention was attracted last year when researchers at the University of Aarhus said the DNA evidence from at least 40 wolves have been identified in the Danish countryside. Recently the number has been down to 23 wolves, but even this is a miscalculation, claim the Copenhagen researchers.

Probably, the Aarhus researchers confused wolves with foxes in their DNA analysis, they say.

This idea is rejected, however, the Aarhus researchers, who maintain that there are at least 23 wolves in the wild in Denmark.
