Dogs killed in wolf attacks
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says in just the last week, wolves killed four dogs in Wisconsin.
Two of the attacks were in Clark County. The other two were in Ashland and Oneida counties. The Clark County attacks happened south of Neillsville and near the Eau Claire River close to the Eau Claire County line. The DNR says this time of year, wolf attacks happen because bear hunters start training their dogs. Wildlife biologist John Dunn says if the dogs run through the wolves’ den sites, the wolves will try to protect their pups.
“The way of avoiding it is to attempt to have an idea where these rendezvous sites are and avoid them. That’s really the answer is to try to avoid these areas with dogs,” says Dunn.
He says there’s really no way to control encounters between dogs and wolves. It’s also illegal to kill a wolf because they are an endangered species.
