EU: European Manifesto on predators

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

STOCKHOLM / TT

Hunter, sheep owner, reindeer herders and environmentalists in the EU have agreed to cooperate more on large carnivores in Europe. On Tuesday representatives of seven organizations representing these interests wrote in an agreement, a manifesto for how predator conflicts will be resolved in the future.

It has been agreed that the EU’s so-called Habitat Directive must be followed, and that the management of the predators should be scientifically based. In addition, consideration should be given to cultural and socio-economic aspects.

Tom Arnbom, carnivore manager at World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Sweden, welcomed the agreement as a major step forward.

“In Swedish ears the way it sounds may not be remarkable. But the collaboration of this kind between different interests is quite new in many other countries,” he says.
