Federal funds will pay for unconfirmed loss to wolves

Federal funds will pay for unconfirmed loss to wolves

BOISE – Idaho has a new compensation fund for ranchers who lose livestock
to unconfirmed wolf kills. Funding for the Idaho Wolf Depredation
Compensation Program comes from $100,000 earmarked by the federal
government. Senator Larry Craig and the Idaho Cattle Association had
requested the account. The Defenders of Wildlife conservation group has
and will continue to pay ranchers for 100 percent of the value of
livestock “confirmed” as wolf kills, and half of the value of “probable”
kills. Ranchers say they lose calves on the range to wolves and lack the
evidence to be reimbursed. The ranchers will send in applications
documenting losses. The deadline for submitting applications is April
20th.
