BOISE — Two gray wolves were shot under orders from the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service for killing calves.

The wolves, an uncollared subadult male and the alpha female of the
Jureano Pack, were shot Monday from a helicopter by U.S. Department of
Agriculture Wildlife Services, said Carter Niemeyer, the wolf recovery
coordinator.

The Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services
and the Nez Perce Tribe first tried other ways of discouraging the wolves
from killing livestock. One method — surrounding grazing areas with twine
tied with red, flapping ribbon — worked for about two months, said
Niemeyer, but then the wolves began attacking livestock again.

Wolves were responsible for seven calf kills on private Salmon-area land
since mid-June, according to the Fish and Wildlife Service.
