ID: Wolf forum Nov. 21

Submitted by Zimo

A discussion on wolves in Idaho is set at 7 p.m., Nov. 21 in the Cole Marr Coffee House at the 8th Street Marketplace in Boise.

“We assure you, this will be a lively discussion,” said Mike Medberry, the organizer.

Fifteen hundred wolves are estimated to be alive in Idaho today, he said. How many will still be here in five years with the hunt proposed by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game is a matter of debate.

Jon Rachel, F&G carnivore biologist, and Suzanne Stone, with Defenders of Wildlife, will explain what is planned and how it may turn out. Former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officer Carter Niemeyer is also invited to participate in the forum.

Come with questions and a willingness to learn a thing or two about wolves, Medberry said.

Wolves were reintroduced in the 1990s by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), a federal agency, under the Endangered Species Act after they were exterminated by trapping, poisoning and shooting. Medberry said today wolves have recolonized many of the original areas where they had lived in Idaho.

Medberry is a writer and an Artist in Residence at the 8th Street Marketplace. He is hosting six readings and events at the Cole Marr Coffee House. Wolf recovery is one of them.
