Idaho officials consider killing wolves to help Clearwater elk

BOISE — Idaho Fish and Game has proposed killing some wolves that hunters think are eating too many game animals.

Thirty-five wolves were reintroduced to central Idaho in 1995 and now there are an estimated 600 in the state.

The federal government recently gave Idaho more control over managing its wolf population.

Now the Fish and Game Commission is considering a plan to kill some wolves to help restore elk populations southeast of Lewiston.

Fish and Game Director Steve Huffaker says there are a lot of wolves in that area and the elk population is struggling there.

The Fish and Game Commission is meeting in Boise Wednesday to discuss the plan.
