Idaho unlikely to beginning killing wolves

Idaho unlikely to beginning killing wolves

JEROME — Idaho Fish and Game biologists say the state won’t start killing its wolves any time soon.

The biologists spoke yesterday at a regular meeting of Fish and Game commissioners.

In January, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service adopted a new rule that loosens restrictions on killing wolves. There are about 525 wolves in Idaho.

Idaho Fish and Game had hoped to start killing wolves this year to help struggling elk herds in the Clearwater Region.

To do that, Fish and Game would have to prove that wolves are keeping the elk population low.

Yesterday, biologists said Fish and Game might not be able to prove that.
