RINGWOOD – Wolves and coyotes are the focal point of the McHenry County Conservation District’s winter programming.
Once hunted to near extinction, the wolf is making a comeback in Wisconsin where Adrian P. Wydeven, a wildlife biologist specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, headed up the state’s wolf recovery program.
Wydeven will be a guest speaker, presenting “Ecology, History and Management of Gray Wolves in Wisconsin,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road in Ringwood.
The event is open to those ages 14 and older. It is free for county residents and $6 for nonresidents. Registration is required by Dec. 25. The presentation will kick off the visit of a free, two-month special exhibit on wolves and other wild canines at the center, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Other related programming includes “Hunting Like a Wolf” for kids ages 10 to 13, which will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 11, and “Wild Canines – Coyote vs. Wolf” for adults and families, which will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 31.
