KS: Last gray wolf at Rolling Hills Zoo dies

ERIN MATHEWS

Rolling Hills Zoo no longer has gray wolves after the death last week of Stony, the last of the zoo’s pack of four male wolves.

Stony, who was 111/2 years old, had to by euthanized Nov. 6 after his health had declined from a rare, aggressive cancer, according to a news release from the zoo.

Stony was born at the Wildlife Safari Park in Omaha, Neb., in May 2001. He had come to Rolling Hills along with three other males, Cain, Rio, and Lobo, in August 2003. Cain passed away in 2010, Rio in 2011, and Lobo earlier this year. Gray wolves typically live six to eight years in the wild, and up to 12 or 13 in captivity, according to the news release.

The zoo is looking at options for the exhibit space that had been home to the wolves, as well as considering acquiring more gray wolves as part of the animal collection.
