Maligne wolves

Maligne wolves

Locals and visitors alike were treated to great wolf viewing last week
when the Maligne pack of two adults and five pups spent a few days feeding
on a moose carcass on the far side of Medicine Lake. A malfunctioning GPS
collar retrieved from one of the adults showed that she’d been on the kill
for 6 or 7 days. This wolf pack spent the summer roaming throughout the
Maligne Range, mostly using the valley bottom. They also spent some of
their time travelling up Beaver Creek towards Summit Lake. Analysis of
this data and that collected from caribou collars will be used to
determine the relationship between wolves and woodland caribou, a species
at risk in the park.
