Man gets probation in killing of 2 wolves

MISSOULA – A Darby taxidermist who pleaded guilty to killing two federally
protected wolves last year must pay $2,000 in restitution and will be on
probation for three years.

Wayne Rose was sentenced in U.S. District Court Tuesday. He pleaded guilty
in June to two counts of killing an endangered species.

Authorities began their investigation in March, after a tip that Rose had
bragged about shooting wolves in the Big Hole Valley, north of Jackson in
southwest Montana.

In an interview later that month, Rose admitted he shot the two males from
his pickup truck in December. He told authorities he thought they were
coyotes, then realized they were wolves, court documents said.

Rose faced a maximum sentence of up to one year in prison and a $100,000
fine.

The $2,000 in restitution will be paid to the Montana State Crime Lab.
