Montana wildlife officials to hold wolf trapping certification classes

HELENA, Mont.(AP) — Montana wildlife officials will hold a series of certification classes ahead of the state’s first-ever wolf-trapping season.

The Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission this summer approved trapping in an attempt to reduce the gray wolf population. Last year, hunters failed to reach the state’s quota of 220 wolves killed.

The trapping season will run from Dec. 15 through Feb. 28 in addition to archery and general rifle seasons.

FWP officials said in a statement Tuesday that certification is required to use a wolf license to trap wolves.

The first class is Saturday morning in Helena. Subsequent classes will be held in Bozeman, Butte, Dillon and Livingston.

Trapping licenses cost $20 for residents and $250 for nonresidents.
