BILLINGS – General wolf rifle hunting season is now in full swing, and trapping season right around the corner in December, so Montana wildlife officials are offering some reminders.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) officials says it is legal to hunt wolves wearing radio collars. However, they are typically used for research purposes, so officials are asking hunters to try and avoid them if possible.
Another common misconception is the question of how many licenses are allowed per person. The state of Montana says five wolves are the legal limit, and this includes both hunting and trapping.
Bob Gibson, FWP’s Communication and Education Program Manager, said wolf hunting and trapping are the most effective ways to control the wolf population in Montana.
“Hunting is one way to control wolf numbers although we find that just hunting alone is not probably going to reduce or even control the number of wolves in Montana, so trapping is the other option,” Gibson said.
He added he believes hunting is an important part of Montana heritage and although trapping can be controversial, it is important for controlling the population.
For those who are looking to get involved with the wolf hunting season, Gibson encourages they contact local ranchers to see if they need any assistance. He also says it is important to keep in mind that all hunted wolves must be reported within 24 hours.
