HELENA, Montana — Montana wildlife commissioners on Wednesday consider more liberal hunting and trapping rules for gray wolves as part of an effort to drive down their population.
A bag limit of five wolves per person and a longer hunting season that would start in mid-September are among the changes recommended by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
Yellowstone National Park administrators have asked for a lower quota for wolves in areas close to the park. But others want fewer hunting and trapping restrictions to help curb wolf attacks on livestock and big game herds.
Public comment will be allowed at the commission meeting in Helena and remotely from the agency’s regional offices.
Montana had an estimated 625 wolves at the end of the 2012. Hunters and trappers in the state killed 225 wolves last season.
