OR: 5-2 SS Wolf Seminar

by David Sparks, Ph.D.

There is an upcoming free Grey Wolf Management Seminar May 12 in Albany Oregon at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center from 8 am until 5:00 put on by the Oregon Hunting Association and the OR CattlemensAssoc. This is a perfect opportunity for hunters who have any interest in the whole Wolf reintroduction program to give input and to learn. My colleague, Susan Allen, talked with Curtis Martin, President of OR Cattlemens Association: “The list of speakers that we have lined up are really experts. Many of them are former wildlife biologists or retired from departments of Fish and Game in different states. They have past experience with wolf interactions not only with big game but with domestic livestock. We think it is a very balanced approach to give people who are not in that environment that have had wolves for the past number of years kind of a preview of what we can expect in Oregon. The sponsoring entity is the Oregon Animal Damage Management Council which is a branch off of the Oregon Hunters Association. They are trying to emphasize to that part of the community that has not been informed very much on what they can expect in terms of their big game populations and decline and what the impact is going to be. We expect more hunter associated individuals that are going to come. These folks who are speaking to the issue have hands on experience with wolves.
