OR: Former Imnaha pack wolf illegally killed

A carcass discovered in Umatilla County in March was that of a gray wolf that originated from the Imnaha pack, according to genetic testing results from the University of Idaho.

Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish & Wildlife Division, with assistance from the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW), is continuing the investigation into the animal’s death. A necropsy confirmed the cause of death was the result of a criminal act, but the actual cause is not being released.

The carcass, discovered March 16 on private property approximately six miles north of Cove, weighed 97 pounds. The animal had been dead for about a week, the investigation determined.

Wolves are protected by the state Endangered Species Act throughout Oregon. Except in the defense of human life or with a special permit, it is unlawful to kill a wolf. Doing so is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $6,250.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact Senior Trooper Kris Davis at 541-963-7175 ext. 4673 or by email at kris.davis@state.or.us.
