OR: New wolf activity reported in the region

SALEM, Oregon – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has made changes in the areas of known wolf activity in Eastern Oregon. That includes a pair of wolves roaming in Umatilla and Morrow counties.

ODFW instituted a new AKWA when two separate groups of two wolves were confirmed to be on the eastern portion of the Heppner Unit in those two counties. Referred to as the Heppner wolves, they will be monitored. It’s not known if the wolves have bred.

During the winter count, biologists also observed OR-60, originally from the Ruckel Ridge Pack, is now in Umatilla County. At this time the wolf appears to be alone.

Further east, ODFW reports that a new group of wolves was discovered after a depredation in the Wallowa Valley of Wallowa County. A male wolf was collared in early June and two additional wolves were documented by remote cameras. Referred to as the OR-76 wolves, their area of activity encompasses western Wallowa County. It’s also believed to include a portion of eastern Union County, but ODFW reports no actual wolf activity in that area has been documented.

The Clark Creek wolves have also been identified in the northern portions of the Catherine Creek and Minam units in Union and Wallowa counties. A pair of wolves were confirmed during the winter county. It’s not known if any of them have bred and monitoring will continue.

A new area of known wolf activity has also been reported in Baker County on the eastern portion of the Lookout Mountain Unit. They are referred to currently as the Lookout Mountain wolves. One of them is a collared disperser from the Middle Fork Pack that moved into the area in late April. Two additional uncollared wolves were documented to be with him in early June.
