OR: Two wolves split from Oregon packs, pair-up in new area

Henry Miller, Statesman Journal

Two wolves have separated from their home packs, paired up and established residence in a new territory southeast of Cove in the northeastern corner of Oregon.

The radio-collared wolves, OR24 from the Snake River Pack and OR27 from the Minam Pack, left their respective territories and paired in July, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Since then the pair has been tracked during June through early November via the Global Positioning System collars in upper-elevation forested areas mostly in the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Establishment of what is called an Area of Known Wolf Activity, non-lethal preventive measures are recommended to minimize conflicts between the wolves and livestock such as removing or burying livestock carcasses and bone piles, using red flags and fencing, dogs and other guard animals and setting up alarms or hazing devices.

Fish and Wildlife officials said that they will update the current activity map if there is a seasonal change in the range of the paired wolves.

The current map of the pair’s range is online at http://stjr.nl/Wolf_map
