OR: Wolf attacks 3 cattle in first southern Oregon attack

Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon wildlife officials said a wolf attacked three cattle last weekend, killing one and wounding two others.

The Statesman Journal reported that the Klamath County incident was the first example of a wolf attacking a domestic animal in southern Oregon and the most western case since the animals were reintroduced to Idaho in 1996.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Michelle Dennehy says the agency will work with its federal counterpart to develop non-lethal measures to help prevent future attacks.

Wolves are protected by the Endangered Species Act in the western two-thirds of Oregon.

The livestock were attacked by a male wolf tagged as OR25. The wolf left the Imnaha Pack in March and eventually settled northeast of Chiloquin.
