Oregon wolves produce more pups than thought

Oregon wolves produce more pups than thought

By Bill Monroe, Special to The Oregonian

Oregon’s wolf packs are under close scrutiny by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, which said in December at least one pack is believed to have produced two more pups than previously thought.

And at least one collared female is missing from her pack and could be at large somewhere else across the state.

Department biologists also have noted videos of an alpha female and two of last year’s pups from the Imnaha pack.

That pack, the state’s largest, is now believed to number at least 16 (spread out, though) and seems to be spending the winter in the Zumwalt area, a favorite elk winter range.

In additon to the Imnaha and Wenaha wolf monitoring, biologists also have begun looking at the Ukiah and Starkey units, although the department was unable to confirm a reported wolf in the Ukiah unit.
