Red wolves added at refuge

Red wolves added at refuge

THE OLYMPIAN

TENINO — A pair of red wolves are coming to Wolf
Haven International.

The red wolf pair will join 34 gray wolves already at the refuge for captive-born gray wolves and other canids. Wolf Haven also is home to five Mexican gray wolves slated for release in Arizona by the Mexican Wolf Recovery Species Survival Plan.

With the addition of red wolves, Wolf Haven will house examples of the three kinds of wolves found in North America.

“The addition of the red wolves to our sanctuary and our public guided tour greatly enhances our ability to educate,” said Julie Palmquist, Wolf Haven spokeswoman.

The Mexican gray wolves at Wolf Haven are not viewed by the public because they are slated for reintroduction to the wild.

Wolf Haven plans to celebrate the event with a Red Wolf Bash starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. Events include:

– Debut of the new wolves: special tours by Will Waddell, red wolf coordinator, and Nancy Sparta, Wolf Haven educator;

– Prairie tours by The Nature Conservancy;

– Live bluegrass music by Looking Glass;

– Barbecue by Smokin’ Bullet;

– Northwest microbrew.

Advance tickets are required; cost is $25 per individual. Proceeds will benefit Wolf Haven outreach and education. To buy tickets, call 360-264-4695.
