SE: Easier to live with wolves

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

Citizens are invited to speak up in the wolf issue. EPA wants the proposal on the measures that help people to live near wolves.

For a few days the Environmental Protection Agency invites citizens to a so-called web consulting. The idea is that everyone who wants to be able to submit proposals that help people to coexist with wolves. Some of the proposals will then be included in the Agency’s management.

Web Consultation should not be a forum for the wolf to be or not be.

“Parliament has decided that we should have a viable wolf population in Sweden. If you want to change that must be addressed to the parliamentary politicians”, says Ruona Burman, game Coordinator at the Environmental Protection Agency.

In Västmanland the wolf debate has been intense over the past year. Many Västmanlanders, especially in the southern parts of the county, has responded that the wolf is observed with increasing frequency.

Ruona Burman compares the current debate in Västmanland with how it was when the wolf established himself in Värmland in the 80 – and 90’s.

“At first they were very negative and felt uneasy. But where after years have passed, you become accustomed to, and today it is fairly easy. It takes time for people to get used to having these animals around.”

You can submit proposals via the Environmental Protection Agency’s website until May 5th
