SE: Hunters appeal wolf decision

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

GOTHENBURG / TT The Hunters Association appealed late Friday afternoon the decision to stop the licensed hunting of wolves in Värmland and Örebro. But the Appeals Court may make a decision on the matter at the earliest at the beginning of next week.

“We dont have time to deal with the case on Friday. And during Saturday and Sunday are not on duty so the plan is that we will be able to address the issue immediately after the weekend,” says Emma Annelund, Appeal Judge at the Appeals Court in Gothenburg.

It was the administrative court in Karlstad that at the last moment stopped the hunting of 24 wolves in Värmland and twelve in Örebro County that would begin on Friday morning. A decision that touched firmly among wolf hunters’ emotions.

A manifestation of protest against the decision attracted over 500 people, many with their hunting dogs, on the main square in Karlstad.

“Direct Indication”

– It is clear that more had been hoped for but considering that we pulled this together in less than a day I have to be satisfied. it was in any case a direct indication against the decision,” says founder Sofia Rockmyr, 27-year-old hunter from Kil said.

In its appeal the Jägareförbund demands that the Administrative Court’s decision be immediately overturned and writes, among other things, that it is remarkable that the court acts with the EU Court and “override Swedish laws and regulations.”

Some time ago, the decision process was changed for the wolf cases. Previously, EPA decided licensed hunting and then it has been appealed to the Administrative Court. The new order means that the Environmental Protection Agency has delegated these issues to the county administration level. At the same time, a provision has been introduced in hunting regulation that says that the county administrative boards’ decisions can be appealed to the Environmental Protection Agency, but not further. Thus, the Agency is the final decision making body and the question is not to be judged in a court of law.

Appealing the appeal prohibition

It is this appeal banning included in the hunting regulation that was appealed by several associations including the World Wildlife Fund.

The Administrative Court considers in its decision to stop hunting license (inhibition) that there are grounds to examine if the new order is in harmony with EU directives.

The inhibition decision is in addition to the Hunters Association also appealing to the Appeal Court by an individual in Värmland calling administrative law a “buffoon authority”. Sofia Rockmyr does not believe that this appeal helps.

“I hope but do not believe it. It will certainly be delayed until it is too late for hunting.”
