SE: Large wolf attack in Hedekas last night

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

A large wolf attacks took place in Hedekas in Munkedals municipality in the night. It was this morning that the animals’ owner discovered the assault and contacted the provincial government.

“(It was) A horrific sight when we came out. We had 43 sheep in the pasture,” says Lars Olof Lyrdal, who owns the farm which was attacked by the wolf.

He quickly realized that 38 ewes had been attacked. All were not dead but they were forced to kill a large number on site.

“We had to destroy 17 that were floundering with legs in the air.”

For Lars Olof Lyrdal it is the first time he experienced a wolf attack. The Board is now on site to do a check and record the attack. He suspects that (the wolves) entered through the water close to the paddock.

“It is terrible. It is difficult to understand what has happened, when you see so many sheep injured, lifeless and obviously we had to kill them too.

“There are animals we have bred and would have used for our flock next year. (They are) Animals lost in our breeding program.

Anitha Bergstedt, predator specialist with the provincial government says to P4 West that it is a confirmed wolf attack with two wolves.

“We have tracks, both in sand and mud with a larger and a smaller wolf.”

The County Board believes that the size of the pasture assisted the attack to become so extensive.

“The animals will appear after all, they are not going away. Wherever they are so visible them. It has triggered the wolves attack instinct.”

Antiha Bergstedt also says that the sheep were protected by a common sheep fence which was open to the lake, then you do not go out in the water, but wolves do. The County Board will not engage in any hunting of wolves for failing to ensure that wolves attacked and that it is the first attack with no repetitive behavior in the area.
