SE: LRF after wolf attack: culling immediately

Roughly translated by TWIN Observer

After Wednesday’s big wolf attack in Hedekas, the debate about wolf again started. The Farmers’ Association thinks the situation is serious.

They want people to introduce culling immediately to support the owners. Paul Christiansson says this, the Chairman of LRF Västra Götaland.

“We must put ourselves in the way it feels for those sheep owner who is affected by the wolf. I meet many members who get so tired of this, they want to end working with animals, he says.

There is mixed opinion about how you should relate to the wolf when the wolf attacks like the one in Hedekas, where 38 sheep died, occurs. The County Board believes that it is only when the wolf gets into the habit of going into paddocks that one should consider culling.

Farmers’ Federation, LRF is careful to point out that they do not dispute that we should have wolves in Sweden, but says that animal owners today may bear too much responsibility.

“I do not think it is fair to shift the responsibility to the owners that way you do. It allows for a part as to those who do not have predator-resistant fencing have themselves to blame,” says Paul Christiansson.

The County Board has urged people to acquire predator repellent fence to keep the wolf away, but he does not think it is reasonable.

“Usually, it is the owners’ responsibility to fence the animals, so that they can not get out, and the animal owners have done it. But now you should enclose so that predators will not get into the pasture. This is a huge cost, which certainly society pays a part of, but you pay no means all of the costs,” says Paul Christiansson.
