Many attacks on sheep by wolves and lynx ware registered in Sweden in 2013, according to new statistics from Viltskadecenter in Bergslagen. The total killed was 341 sheep by wolves and 169 by lynx.
“We may assume that the number of destroyed sheep will increase in the future if the wolf population continues to grow and the wolves spreading to areas where sheep farming is common,” says Inga steam stage, Operations Manager at Viltskadecenter.
But she points out that while 2013 overall was a fairly typical year in terms of predator damage to livestock. In addition to 522 killed sheep, losses were limited to four killed cattle, two goats and two horses. Altogether the state paid 2.217 million crowns in compensation for predator attacks.
Also 395,000 crowns were granted in compensation for 39 attacked dogs. Of those 17 were killed.
